The Department of Botany, Government College Kottayam, maintains a Herbal Garden on campus. It is with a collection of important Indian Medicinal plants of India. The Garden was initiated during the academic year 2015 – 2016 with the support of the State Medicinal Plant Board, Kerala. At the initial stage, the medicinal herbs were provided by Service Co–Operative Bank Nattakom – 3839. In addition to herbaceous members, the garden with members of both tree and shrub habits. The plantlets for the garden are collected from herbal garden nurseries across Kerala. At present, the garden is with more than 100 medicinal plants. The collection includes members like Woodfordia fruticosa, Pterocarpus santalinus, Sarcostemma brunonianum, Teminalia chebula, Trichopus zeylanicus, Memecylon umbellatum etc. The purpose of the herbal garden is to conserve important medicinal plants of Kerala and make the students aware of the importance of those medicinal plants.
